Chan Chan & Historic Trujillo

🏛️ Chan Chan Archaeological Complex

Our main visit will be to the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex, the capital of the ancient Chimú civilization and the largest pre-Columbian adobe city in the Americas.

Chan Chan flourished between approximately the 9th and 15th centuries, before the Chimú Kingdom was conquered by the Incas. The city was made almost entirely of adobe and was organized into enormous ceremonial and administrative compounds, plazas, temples, storage areas, and residential sectors.

During our visit, we will explore the archaeological areas open to visitors and learn about the Chimú civilization, their sophisticated urban organization, religious beliefs, agricultural techniques, and remarkable mastery of adobe architecture.

Particular attention will be given to the beautifully decorated reliefs featuring marine and geometric motifs, which reflect the important relationship between the Chimú people and the Pacific Ocean.

Chan Chan will be the priority of the tour, allowing us to dedicate sufficient time to appreciate the site without rushing.

⛪ Trujillo Historic Center

After Chan Chan, we will continue to the historic center of Trujillo, one of Peru’s most beautiful colonial cities.

Founded by the Spanish in 1534, Trujillo developed into an important political, commercial, and cultural center during the colonial period. Its historic center is characterized by elegant colonial and republican architecture, colorful facades, ornate churches, and historic mansions.

We will explore the city’s principal landmarks, including:

🟨 Plaza de Armas

The Plaza de Armas of Trujillo is the heart of the historic center and one of the city’s most impressive colonial spaces.

Here we can admire the colorful colonial buildings surrounding the square and the Monument to Liberty, created by German sculptor Edmund Möeller and inaugurated in 1929.

The square is also an excellent place to appreciate the distinctive architecture and history of Trujillo.

⛪ Trujillo Cathedral

Located on the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral of Trujillo is one of the city’s most important religious landmarks.

Its history dates back to the colonial period, and its interior contains religious artwork and decorative elements that reflect the artistic traditions that developed in northern Peru.

🏛️ Colonial Mansions

Depending on the time available, we will also pass by or visit some of Trujillo’s historic colonial mansions.

These elegant residences are characterized by their large wooden doors, colorful facades, elaborate windows, and traditional courtyards. They provide an excellent example of the wealth and social importance that Trujillo acquired during the colonial period.

Among the most notable examples are the Casa Urquiaga, Casa de la Emancipación, and other historic residences around the Plaza de Armas.

🏘️ Historic Streets and Churches

We will also have the opportunity to walk through some of the traditional streets of the historic center and see several of its important churches and architectural landmarks.

The exact route will be adapted according to the time available, with Chan Chan always remaining the main priority.
