Today is dedicated to one of the most important archaeological discoveries in South America.

Start with a visit to Huaca Rajada (Sipán), where the tomb of the Lord of Sipán was found intact. This discovery revealed extraordinary treasures and provided invaluable information about Moche elite life, comparable to the discoveries of ancient Egypt.

Continue to the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, a world-class museum designed to replicate a pyramid structure. Inside, you will see original gold ornaments, jewelry, ceremonial objects and a full reconstruction of the royal tomb.

Continue to Quiocta Cavern, a natural cave filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Explore this underground landscape while learning about its geological formation and cultural significance.

Early in the morning, we travel to the village of El Tingo, where we will board the modern Kuelap cable cars (telecabinas), a unique experience that allows you to ascend comfortably into the cloud forest while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views.

The cable car ride offers an unforgettable journey above lush landscapes, mountains and valleys, making the approach to Kuelap part of the adventure itself.

Upon arrival, we continue with a guided visit to the impressive Kuelap Fortress, often referred to as the “Machu Picchu of the North”. This massive stone complex, built by the Chachapoyas culture, features towering defensive walls, circular dwellings and strategic viewpoints overlooking the cloud forest.

The controlled environment of the museum allows visitors to observe these ancient remains along with textiles, ceramics and funerary offerings, providing a rare and intimate look into burial traditions and beliefs.

Unlike larger museums, Leymebamba offers a quiet and immersive atmosphere, making it a truly special cultural experience.

Our first stop is Cumbemayo, located over 3,500 meters above sea level. This site is home to an extraordinary pre-Inca hydraulic system carved directly into volcanic rock. The canals, still functioning today, demonstrate an advanced understanding of water management dating back more than 3,000 years.

The surrounding landscape is equally impressive, featuring unique rock formations known as the “stone forest”, shaped by erosion into almost surreal figures.

Next, we visit the Ventanillas de Otuzco, a mysterious archaeological site consisting of hundreds of small niches carved into volcanic rock cliffs. These niches were used as ancient burial chambers, and their scale and symmetry continue to intrigue archaeologists and visitors alike.

To end the day, we visit the famous Baños del Inca, natural thermal springs historically used by Inca royalty. Here you can relax in warm mineral-rich waters, a perfect way to unwind after several days of exploration.
